Eliphalet A. Bulkeley founded the company in Connecticut in 1850 who organized an annuity fund to sell life insurance. He was also the president of Mutual Life Insurance Company, which again was established by him 1846. Till 1854, Aetna Inc was a one employee company run entirely by Bulkeley, which changed when the first employee of the company came on board. Today Fortune magazine recognizes the company as the Most Admired Company in Health Care: Insurance and Managed Care category. Davies Public Affairs also considers Aetna as the preferred partner for hospitals and health systems across the US, a coveted distinction in healthcare industry.
